Social Media Image Sizes 2026: Complete Resize Guide
By ToolPix Team
Why Image Dimensions Matter on Social Media
Each social media platform displays images at specific aspect ratios and resolutions. If your image does not match the expected dimensions, the platform will automatically crop, scale, or letterbox it — often cutting off important content or introducing blurriness.
Getting image sizes right is not just about aesthetics. Research consistently shows that properly sized images receive higher engagement. A 2025 study by Sprout Social found that posts with optimally-sized images received 38% more engagement than those with incorrectly-sized images.
This guide provides the recommended dimensions for every major platform and placement as of 2026. Use our Image Resizer to quickly resize images to any of these dimensions.
Instagram Image Sizes
Instagram supports three aspect ratios for feed posts and has specific requirements for Stories and Reels:
Feed Posts
- Square post: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1 ratio) — The classic Instagram format. Still the most universally compatible.
- Portrait post: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5 ratio) — Takes up more vertical screen space, increasing visibility and engagement. This is the recommended default for most content.
- Landscape post: 1080 x 566 px (1.91:1 ratio) — Least common and takes up less screen space. Not recommended unless the content specifically requires it.
Stories and Reels
- Stories: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16 ratio) — Full-screen vertical format. Leave ~250px of safe zone at top and bottom for UI elements.
- Reels cover image: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16 ratio) — Same as Stories.
Profile
- Profile picture: 320 x 320 px minimum (displays as circle, 110px on mobile). Upload at 320px or larger for sharpness on all devices.
Instagram Tips
Instagram compresses uploaded images, so upload at the highest quality possible (JPEG quality 95+) and let the platform handle compression. Uploading an already-compressed image leads to double compression artifacts.
Facebook Image Sizes
Feed Posts
- Shared image: 1200 x 630 px (1.91:1 ratio) — The standard dimensions for link previews and shared images.
- Square post: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1 ratio) — Works well for standalone images.
- Portrait post: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5 ratio) — Supported and takes more feed space.
Cover and Profile
- Page cover photo: 1640 x 856 px (desktop), 1640 x 924 px (mobile crop). Design with mobile crop in mind — keep important content centered.
- Profile picture: 176 x 176 px (displays at), upload at 360 x 360 px or larger.
- Event cover: 1200 x 628 px (1.91:1 ratio).
Facebook Tips
Facebook heavily compresses uploaded images. For best results, upload PNG files for graphics with text, and high-quality JPEG (95+) for photographs. Avoid images under 600px wide — they will appear blurry on high-density displays.
Twitter/X Image Sizes
Feed Posts
- Single image: 1600 x 900 px (16:9 ratio) — Recommended for maximum display area in the feed.
- Two images: Each 700 x 800 px (7:8 ratio) — Side by side layout.
- Three images: Left 700 x 800 px, right two 600 x 400 px each.
- Four images: Each 600 x 400 px (3:2 ratio) — 2x2 grid.
Profile and Header
- Profile picture: 400 x 400 px (displayed as circle).
- Header image: 1500 x 500 px (3:1 ratio). Mobile displays crop the top and bottom, so keep important content in the center vertical third.
Twitter/X Tips
Twitter uses an AI-powered image cropping algorithm for preview thumbnails. To control what part of your image shows in the preview, compose your image with the focal point in the center. You can also add alt text for accessibility, which Twitter now prominently supports.
LinkedIn Image Sizes
- Shared image: 1200 x 627 px (1.91:1 ratio) — Standard link preview and shared image.
- Company page cover: 1128 x 191 px — Very wide, banner format.
- Profile picture: 400 x 400 px — Displays as circle.
- Personal cover photo: 1584 x 396 px (4:1 ratio).
- Article cover image: 1200 x 644 px.
Pinterest Image Sizes
- Standard pin: 1000 x 1500 px (2:3 ratio) — This is the ideal ratio for pins. Pins longer than 2:3 are truncated in the feed.
- Square pin: 1000 x 1000 px (1:1 ratio) — Acceptable but takes less space.
- Profile picture: 165 x 165 px (displayed as circle).
- Board cover: 222 x 150 px.
Pinterest Tips
Pinterest is a visual search engine, and image quality directly impacts discoverability. Use high-resolution images, add text overlays for context, and always maintain the 2:3 aspect ratio for optimal display. Our Image Cropper can help you crop to the exact 2:3 ratio.
TikTok Image Sizes
- Video thumbnail: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16 ratio) — Full vertical format.
- Profile picture: 200 x 200 px minimum — Displays as circle.
YouTube Image Sizes
- Thumbnail: 1280 x 720 px (16:9 ratio) — Must be at least 640px wide. This is the most important YouTube image — compelling thumbnails are the biggest driver of click-through rate.
- Channel banner: 2560 x 1440 px (upload size). The safe area for all devices is the center 1546 x 423 px.
- Profile picture: 800 x 800 px — Displays as circle at various sizes across the platform.
YouTube Tips
YouTube thumbnails are arguably the most impactful images in all of social media marketing. They should be high-contrast, include faces when possible, use large readable text, and have a consistent brand style. Our Image Resizer ensures your thumbnails are exactly 1280x720.
Universal Tips for Social Media Images
- Always design for mobile first. The majority of social media consumption happens on mobile devices. Ensure text is large enough to read on small screens.
- Upload the highest quality possible. Every platform compresses uploads. Starting with a high-quality source minimizes quality loss.
- Keep text to under 20% of the image area. While no longer enforced algorithmically on most platforms, images with minimal text tend to perform better organically.
- Use consistent branding. Consistent colors, fonts, and styles help followers recognize your content instantly while scrolling.
- Test across devices. What looks great on a desktop monitor may be cropped differently on a phone. Preview on both before posting.
